- Ensure the sunscreen is "broad-spectrum" which protects against UVA and UVB.
- Use SPF 30 or higher.
- Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours or more frequently if sweating or swimming.
- If sweating or swimming, ensure the label says the sunscreen is water-resistant.
- It takes about 1 ounce of sunscreen to cover the average adult. 1 ounce is often referred to as the amount to fill a shot glass.
- It is important to apply sunscreen even on cloudy days.
- Sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months old. Babies younger than 6 months old should be kept away from direct sunlight.
Tips for Sun Protection

- Seek shade when available.
- When possible, wear sun protective clothing (UPF rated clothing), wide brim hats, and sunglasses.
- Sun burn, sun tanning, and tanning beds significantly increase your risk of skin cancer and premature aging.
- Snow, sand, and water can also reflect UV rays leading to sun exposure.
- Don't forget to protect your lips with an SPF lip balm!
